475 Anniversary of Santiago City Foundation

A lot can happen in the 475 years of a city’s existence. Since its foundation on February 12th, 1541 by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia, Santiago de Chile has emerged as a cultural icon and landmark city of South America. It's now the sixth largest city on the continent, with just over 5.5 million people.

The city was originally named after St. James, the patron saint of Spain. The name Santiago actually derives from a colloquial Latin pronunciation of St. James: Sanctu Iacobu. That’s why St. James in English is Santiago in Spanish. Write that one down for your next trivia night.

Today, we honor all the people who have called Santiago their home over the years. Doodler Mark Holmes chose to portray the varied architecture of the city, layered against the august backdrop of Chile’s astounding Andes mountain range. WIth deep admiration, we wish you a happy birthday, Santiago!

41st Anniversary of the discovery of Lucy

On November 24th, 1974, as dusk settled upon the southern edge of the Afar Triangle near a village called Hadar, a team of scientists organized by Yves Coppens, Maurice Taieb and Donald Johanson toasted a tremendous discovery.

They had been scouring this region for weeks--an area Taieb had brought to the forefront of anthropological research years earlier--and that morning their search paid enormous dividends with the find of Dr. Johanson and his student Tom Gray. 

The skeletal fragments unearthed in the Ethiopian landscape made up the most complete example of Australopithecus afarensis ever found.

While they celebrated, a small tape recorder blared ”Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds”, again and again. And then it struck someone--what finer name than Lucy for the incredible specimen pulled from the sand that day?

In the coming months and years, this find would upend our understanding of bipedalism, and rewrite a significant chapter in the story of human evolution. To recognize the 41st anniversary of this historic moment, Kevin Laughlin has brought Lucy and her upright gait to life on our homepage.

57th Anniversary of Elderly Gentleman's Cabaret's TV premiere

Today's Doodle marks the 57th Anniversary of the first episode of the polish television show, Elderly Gentleman's Cabaret or Kabaret Starszych Panów.

The show premiered October 16th, 1958 and was titled "Afternoon Old Men", starring the two creators: poet Jeremi Przybora and composer Jerzy Wasowski. Elegantly dressed in now-iconic dinner jackets and top hats, the pair performed satirical musical acts that addressed major cultural changes of the 50's and 60's.

The show aired late at night, and though not many people owned TVs, it was a smashing success. Soon it was a nation-wide household name — friends and families congregated around TV sets in their neighbor's homes to watch two gentlemen cavort and sing.

The legendary cabaret-style show aired during primetime on Polish public television for 8 years, and featured cameos from top Polish actors and singers. The program brought humor, wit and artistic excellence to the small screen and garnered die-hard followers for decades to come.

Yps Magazine's 40th anniversary

Forty years ago today, Yps Magazine published its first comic. Or, perhaps more memorably, it was on this day forty years ago that some Germans opened Yps Magazine’s first “gimmick”. 

The comic itself was replete with tales of mystery, peril, and adventure, but many would agree that the most irresistible surprise was the toy that came with each new edition. They ranged from the simple (spinning tops) to the sophisticated (kits to build functioning radios), and often the slightly bizarre: one common and beloved gimmick was a package of Brine Shrimp eggs that young readers were encouraged to hatch and grow themselves. 

Today’s Doodle hearkens back to the simpler days of childhood, when the month’s most nagging uncertainty was the prize awaiting young readers beneath Yps Magazine’s plastic cover.

Artist Nate Swinehart endeavored to recapture this sense of anticipation and mystery with a Doodle that changes each time you see it. Happy unwrapping, Germany.

605th Anniversary of Prague astronomical clock

The hands of Prague’s astronomical clock have measured a staggering amount of history. It predates Shakespeare by over a century, and had been operational for two years by the time Joan of Arc was born. Despite over a half a millennium of wear and a brush with disaster in WWII, much of its original machinery remains intact, making it the oldest functioning clock of its kind in the world. 

Today’s Doodle honors a magnificent achievement in medieval engineering and a cultural landmark whose symbolism, design, and intermittent repairs are a remarkable catalogue of Europe’s past.
