Google Doodle for Evidence of water found on Mars

Sep 29, 2015

Today’s news stirred us like a long, cool drink in the blistering heat. Science has gestured at the presence of water on Mars before, but evidence of liquid water--briny, creeping flows that appear in a crater during Martian summers--has tremendous implications in the search for life beyond our planet. We felt compelled to honor such an exciting discovery with a Doodle, and staring at satellite images of Mars for inspiration made Doodler Nate Swinehart really, really thirsty.

Google Doodle for Google's 17th Birthday

Sep 27, 2015

In the world of computer programming, 17 is widely considered the least random number. To assume we made it this far without a little luck, though, would be like assuming lava lamps, turtlenecks, and servers held together by building blocks are harbingers of success. For our 17th birthday, we offer a glimpse into our humble beginnings, when branded hockey jerseys were cool and Savage Garden had a number-one single.

Sometimes you just gotta work with what you have. That’s how you end up with a server made up of toy building blocks.

Not sure what’s more of a relic from a bygone era, the lava lamp or the computer monitor.

Linux penguin was always in search of frosty beverages. Naturally.

Inside Google’s first office, also known as Larry and Sergey’s Stanford dorm rooms. They had to find alternative arrangements when the Stanford IT department complained they were sucking up all the bandwidth.

Google’s first homepage (it worked better than it looked).

The office (and attire) may have changed, but the people are still what matter the most.

Today’s Doodle marks the approach of the Mid-Autumn moon, a spectacular sight whose effulgence and good tidings have enraptured its beholders for centuries. On the heels of a bountiful harvest, amid deepening shades of red and orange and the unmistakable smells of fall, celebrations of thanks and togetherness will fill the air across Japan as millions of eyes gaze dreamily upward.

Google Doodle for Chuseok 2015

Sep 27, 2015
Once a year, Koreans flock from the big city to visit their ancestral hometowns to celebrate Chuseok, a time of thankfulness and memorial. Along with friends and family, they dedicate the next three days to celebrating the harvest with traditional feasts of songpyeon and hangwa, rice wines like dongdongju, and games and dances like Ssireum and Ganggangsullae.

Like other autumn equinox festivals across the world, Koreans spend Chuseok giving thanks for the good things in their lives. It’s also a time to venerate ancestors whose spirits watch over the living. After a morning memorial service and a special feast (Charye), the people of Korea honor their ancestors by visiting their gravesites (Seongmyo) and tidying up the surrounding area (Beolcho).

Created by Kevin Laughlin, today’s Doodle illustrates the vibrant variations of songpyeon, rice cakes stuffed with beans and nuts and steamed over pine needles. Songpyeon is typically the centerpiece of Chuseok feasts, garnishing the celebration with fragrance and color.

Google Doodle for Mid Autumn Festival 2015

Sep 27, 2015

Celebrated on the fifteenth day of China’s eighth lunar month, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a moment of thanks and togetherness whose origins stretch deeply into ancient history. In days long since passed, so the myth goes, ten blazing suns beat mercilessly upon the earth, withering crops and blistering fields beyond salvation. A skillful hunter named Hou Yi rode to the top of Mount Kunlun where, with tremendous strength, he drew an immense bow and shot down the nine superfluous suns, cooling the earth and revivifying the harvest.

In return for his heroism, Hou Yi was bequeathed an elixir that would elevate him to the heavens and render him immortal. Unable to bear the thought of leaving his wife, Cháng'é, and fearing the vial would fall into the wrong hands, he gave her the potion and asked that she deliver it from sight. One day, while Hou Yi was out, a nefarious squire stole into his quarters in search of the elixir. Finding Cháng'é, the man demanded it; knowing a struggle would be futile, Cháng'é dashed away and swallowed the potion, whereupon she drifted into the ether and landed on the moon.

Returning to find his beloved had vanished, Hou Yi was plunged into a deep sadness. But upon lifting his eyes to the sky that night, he beheld a particularly brilliant lunar glow.

And being that the moon, as it is, can be something of a lonely place, Cháng'é is accompanied by rabbits wherever she goes.

There are a few ways to turn heads on a football field. Some get looks because they throw a great deep ball, some have soft hands; some can run the 40-yard dash under 4.5 seconds. Another way is to dump a bucket of ice cold water on your coach’s head. Maybe they’ll cut the kid some slack--it is little g’s birthday, after all.

Google Doodle for 200th Anniversary of the Dutch Kingdom

Sep 26, 2015
In 1815, William I hoisted a crown upon his head.

For the next two centuries, the small yet mighty Netherlands took shape through a set of visionary milestones: in 1848, the freedoms of assembly, association, and education became rights for Dutch citizens. In 1863, slavery was abolished. In 1958, the Dutch co-founded the European Union. Now, 200 years later, the Netherlands prides itself on its openness, inclusion, and unwavering respect for the democratic rule of law. Plus, it’s one of the happiest countries in the world. Which, if you’ve seen the landscapes, might not be so surprising...

Happy 200th Anniversary to the Dutch Kingdom!

Google Doodle for First Day of Fall 2015 (Northern Hemisphere)

Notice what’s been popping up lately? Pumpkins, squash, and some curious little critters, hungry for a harvest?

No surprise – today’s the first day of fall! It’s also known as the Autumnal Equinox, a time when day and night are equally long... meaning nature’s about to make way for the shorter days of winter.

Today's doodle, created by guest artist Kirsten Lepore, shows off the colorful offerings of fall we’ll enjoy during the cooler months ahead.

Google Doodle for Saudi Arabia National Day 2015

Sep 23, 2015

Seated on the central coast of the Red Sea, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia’s second largest city, is home to the magnificent display of maritime engineering seen at the center of today’s Doodle. Spraying a plume of water nearly 1,000 feet in the air, King Fahad’s Fountain is the tallest manmade geyser in the world. At night, the immense stream and its trails of mist are illuminated by over 500 high-intensity spotlights, a spectacle that dominates the night sky above Jeddah and can be seen from all over the city.

Google Doodle for Respect for the Aged Day 2015

Sep 21, 2015

Since 1966, Respect for the Aged Day has been a time to revere the wisest people we know. Today Japan celebrates its elders, the men and women who paved the way for their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to leave their mark on society. Communities across the country will gather to enjoy musical performances and offer their elders gifts like bento boxes, flowers, and handmade crafts.

Caption: Doodler Kevin Laughlin tries his hand with early Doodle concepts based on traditional Respect for the Aged Day gifting.

The elderly in your community have experiences to share, stories to tell, and wisdom to pass along. Do something nice today for the elders in your community to show your admiration. (Might we suggest volunteering at a senior center near you?)

Today we celebrate Arbor Day by taking time to appreciate and help preserve the environment around us. Trees provide shelter, food, clean air, and many other benefits for wildlife and humans alike.

Children's Day 2015 (Germany)

Today, around three hundred and fifty thousand children will open their eyes for the very first time.

They’ll arrive from all over, but will eventually learn a universal language: one of surprise, fascination, fear, joy and hope. And as they grow, they’ll use these emotions to teach us how to live, and to see our lives through newer, fresher eyes. Google Doodle for Chile National Day 2015

Sep 18, 2015

Chile National Day 2015

History tells us that Chileans are a brave, resilient people. On September 18th, 1810, in an open forum, the “First Government Assembly" was created, setting in motion the independence of Chile. Today, we celebrate Fiestas Patrias with a Doodle of an Araucaria, the towering national tree of Chile which – in the wake of the September 16th earthquake – symbolizes the strength of Chileans to stand tall in the face of adversity.

This Chilean pine (or Pehuén), known for its lofty stature and thousand-year-old origins, was illustrated by guest Doodler, Patrick Leger. Like this tree, we know that Chile will withstand, and overcome, any challenge that appears before it.
An earlier sketch by the artist, Patrick Leger

Google Doodle for Rugby World Cup 2015 Opening Day

Sep 18, 2015

Rugby World Cup 2015 Opening Day

Coming through!

Having grown up playing rugby in England, I can still feel the muddy squelch in my boots lining up on the pitch for lessons. Our doodle celebrates the girth and gracefulness of the 2015 World Cup players.

After a few concepts I concentrated on the vice like grip of an arm around the ball and how this could be used as a "G". I even added rain for the full effect.

Good luck to all involved in the tournament!

Google Doodle for M.F. Husain’s 100th Birthday

Sep 17, 2015

M.F. Husain’s 100th Birthday

Today's Doodle celebrates the 100th birthday of one of India's most renowned and multifaceted artists, M.F. Husain, who passed away June 9th, 2011, at the age of 95.

Maqbool Fida Husain, commonly known as M.F. Husain, has been called "The Picasso of India.” This was partly due to his modernist, slightly cubist paintings and to the sheer volume of work he produced. His middle name, Fida, can be translated as “obsessed” or “devoted,” which could also describe his approach to making art.

Husain’s first love was cinema and he originally set out to become a film director in Bombay. But in order to make a living, he got a job painting film billboards and making toys. Painting soon became his passion, and inspired by the changes in India in the late 1940s, he helped found The Progressive Artists Group of Bombay (PAG). He and his fellow artists attempted to address Indian themes, culture and people in a modern way and bring Indian art to an international audience. Husain became particularly known for his energetic painting of horses and serial depictions of classic narratives such as the Mahabharata.

Eventually the recognition and acclaim he received from his early paintings led him back to cinema. With funding from the government of India, he wrote and directed his first film, Through the Eyes of a Painter. The success of that first film led to film projects and a close relationship with cinema that he would maintain throughout the rest of his life. Still he continued to paint, make prints, take photos and find new themes and ideas to explore. He was ever restless, ever prolific and energized by the world around him.

As he said in a television interview in 2010, "What is this physical presence? In today's world with so much technology and communication you are everywhere and a creative person is not bound by any geography." This doodle celebrates Husain's unapologetic devotion to beauty, people, and the world.

Google Doodle for Mexico National Day 2015

Sep 16, 2015

Mexico National Day 2015

On September 16th, 1810, at the heels of revolutionary leader Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, Mexico declared herself a free state and began its eleven-year struggle for independence. To celebrate the centennial of this moment in Mexican history, a team of artists and engineers erected the gold victory column that juts into the sky above Mexico City and finds itself at the center of today’s Doodle. The statue--a rendering of Nike, the Winged Goddess of Victory--holds a severed chain in her left hand and sits atop a mausoleum in which the remains of Mexico’s most cherished revolutionary figures are entombed.

Today, guest artist Ana Ramirez celebrates El Ángel with a burst of color befitting the fervor and exuberance of Miguel Hidalgo’s centuries-old Grito de Dolores. ¡Viva México!

Google Doodle for 22nd anniversary of the official recognition of French traditional bread

Sep 13, 2015

22nd anniversary of the official recognition of French traditional bread

It’s difficult to appreciate something as humble as a loaf of bread--the transformative powers of yeast, the unequivocal and even legal necessity of proper kneading--without having tried to bake one yourself. So while artist Matt Cruickshank sketched today’s Doodle, we tried. A lot.

There's nothing quite like freshly baked bread. Its magic transcends the sum of its parts: the crunch of the crust, the spring of the crumb; the way its scent suffuses the air with warmth.

I've baked sporadically since I first tried the bread recipe in a cookbook my aunt gave me when I was a child, and my love of bread and baking was nurtured by my father's delicious weekend breads. When I joined the doodle team last year, I hadn't baked in a while, but in short order discovered that several of my teammates were active bakers. There were often fresh baked treats passed around at our Tuesday morning brainstorming sessions, and, my interest rekindled, I began taking to the oven regularly.

After several months, I had yet to attempt the true test of a baker's skill: the baguette. I went to work, researching recipes and techniques, poring over pictures, visiting local bakeries, and trying my hand every weekend. I baked baguettes until I had no room left to store them.

The perfect baguette--if it exists--is elusive, and the French bakers capable of producing anything close are true artisans. To celebrate the French government’s 1993 décret pain, we offer a look into our enthusiastic, sometimes moderately successful, often mutated attempts at proper French bread.
