Finland National Day 2015
Today is itsenäisyyspäivä, Finland's Independence Day.
Doodler Alyssa Winans and her colleague in Helsinki illustrated today's
design with a cozy-looking home flying the siniristilippu (blue-cross
flag).
Many Finns do indeed stay indoors for this holiday: they gather
around televisions to watch a national broadcast of Tuntematon sotilas
(The Unknown Soldier), a film based on the novel by Väinö Linna.
They're also entertained by live coverage of the Independence Day Reception, an annual event at the Presidential Palace
that honors veterans and attracts glamorous guests.
This year, the
chosen theme for the party was "culture". And to that, we raise our
glasses. Kippis!
